Australian $5 Coins

1992 Year of Space UNC $5

Aluminum Bronze

Since the dawn of time, man has looked to the night sky with wonderment and fascination, drawn to the stars with almost mystic curiosity. To commemorate Australia's invaluable and ongoing role in space technology and research, the Royal Australian Mint has produced this $5 coin.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse.

It was distributed mounted on a colourful see-both-sides cardboard card protected by a plastic sleeve. The coin is not protected from the elements at all and most are quite toned.

The reverse design of this coin is the result of an Australia wide competition held during late 1991. The winner was John Skillington , a teacher from Albury, NSW.
In response to the competition brief, which called for designed reflecting Australia's role in the space industry and the benefits of space technology to our lifestyles, his design features the form of the Southern Cross as a suggestion of satellites orbiting above and scanning a globally rendered Australian continent.
