1994 Enfranchisement of Women UNC $5


Commemorating the historic achievement of Australian suffragists gaining the freedom to vote and the right to stand for public office, this bi-metallic coin is an innovation in minting in Australia and the first such coin made in Australia.
Trying to gather details but according to a mint employee they had great trouble with the Stainless steel outer ring. The coin fuses together when struck, but the extremely hard stainless steel played merry hell with the dies with them dying after only 100 or so coins.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse.

It was distributed mounted on a colourful see-both-sides card about the size of a credit card. These cards do tend to be scratched.

As a tribute to Mary Lee,the leading South Australian suffragist, the Royal Australian Mint produced this special uncirculated coin, 100 years after the Enfranchisement of Women in South Australia.
