Gold 20 Francs

Switzerland Gold 20 Francs

.900 Gold

Switzerland is famous for the gold stored in its banks. Its best known gold coin is the 20 franc which was issued from 1886 to 1947. Ten franc coins were also issued from 1911 to 1922, although these are not seen as frequently as the twenty francs. Gold coins of other denominations have also been issued, but mainly for presentation purposes rather than for circulation.
This type was issued from 1897 to 1935, then again in 1945 to 1947

1935 Switzerland 20 Francs Reverse

1935 Switzerland 20 Francs Obverse

This is the second type of Swiss Francs known as "Vrenelli" which depicts a female head with plaited hair, a garland of edelweiss flowers, with mountains behind and the inscription HELVETIA, the Roman name for Switzerland above.
The reverse has a Swiss Cross on a ornate shield superimposed on an oak branch with ribbons. The value 20 FR appears at the sides of the shield, and the date below with the mintmark "B", for the Bern mint, to the right and "L" to the left ,which denotes that these coins were actually minted in 1945-47. Although some guides indicate that these were made in 1946,1947 and 1948.
