Australian $1 Coins

1992 Australian One Dollar Uncirculated Five Coin Set

The Royal Australian Mint released for the first time all variations of Australia's one dollar coin designs in this special Uncirculated coin set.
All the coins for this set were actually made in 1992 making this set a collection of official re-strikes, one of the first Uncirculated sets with re-struck coins.
One dollar coins were introduced into circulation in 1984, following a decision by the Australian Government to withdraw the one dollar note from circulation. The 1984 one dollar coins, although issued for circulation, and packaged as individual collector items, were not included in the Mint's annual coin sets that year. In keeping with the Australian fauna designs on existing decimal coins, Stuart Devlin designed the reverse which features five kangaroos. The obverse carries the original Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Following a decision by Buckingham Palace to update the Queen's portrait in 1985, a new obverse effigy was designed by London-based artist Raphael Maklouf. Maklouf's coin design, which has been used on all Australian coins since 1985, was selected from a field of seventeen British and Commonwealth artists who were invited to submit portrait models. The 1985 coin carries the standard Stuart Devlin reverse design.
In recognition of the International Year of Peace in 1986, the Royal Australian Mint struck Australia's first commemorative one dollar coin. The coin reverse, featuring the symbolic dove of peace, was designed by the Mint's Chief Engraver, Horst Hahne.
Australia's second commemorative one dollar coin was minted for the country's Bicentennial celebrations in 1988. The coin reverse, designed by Stuart Devlin, features a stylised kangaroo design in an Aboriginal style, in recognition of Australia's Aboriginal culture and heritage.
The 1992 one dollar coin commemorates the 25th Olympiad in the Spanish city of Barcelona and also honours the achievements of Australia's sporting women. The javelin thrower on the coin's reverse is the first woman other than the Queen and the Princess of Wales to appear on an Australian coin. Designed by Perth artist Margaret Priest, the coin was modeled by Mint engraver, Wojciech Pietranik.
