2004 150th Anniversary of Eureka Stockade

In the dusty Victorian goldfields of 1854, a group of miners led by Peter Lalor, angered by unfair government treatment, prepared for battle behind a barricade constructed from pikes, posts and overturned carts.
At daybreak on Sunday, 3 December 1854 the course of Australian history took a sharp and bloody turn when Victorian Government troops stormed the stockade in a well manned, well armed surprise attack. As the flag of the Southern Cross flew overhead, sounds of the bitter conflict rang out through the Victorian bushland. When the last shot had been fired, thirty miners and five soldiers lay mortally wounded.

In the subsequent outcry that followed the miner's ended up receiving most of their demands, with their leader going on to become a member of Parliament.

The 2004 Eureka Stockade $1 Coin commemorates the struggle of this day with a poignant design from Wojciech Pietranik and pays tribute to an event which shaped the character of our democracy and our concept of liberty.
