Centenary of the Australian Army
|Towards the end of the 1800's Australia's six colonies
realised it would be difficult to defend the vast areas with such a small population. So it
was not surprising that following Federation, one of the new government's first actions
was to unite the existing colonial troops into a single force. In 2001, we celebrate the
Centenary of the Australian Army and the traditions forged by our troops over the
|Australia Post recognised the centenary of the formation of the
Australian Army with a commemorative issue of two 45c stamps and a 2001 Army $1 Coin. The
stamps illustrate the Army's historical and contemporary roles and the nature of its
service over a century of tremendous change. The Army's Rising Sun Badge and "100
years of service" appear.
A total of 27,209* packs consisting of a specimen quality 2001 Centenary of the Australian Army dollar coin and two 45 cent Army Postage Stamps were jointly issued by Australia Post and the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra on 15th February, 2001.
The postage stamps have been cancelled with a special ink mark which has a representation of the famous Rising Sun Badge and reads;
'First Day of Issue 15th February 2001 St Kilda Road Melbourne 3004'
