Australian Silver Proof Two Dollars

1988 First Year Of Issue

.925 Sterling Silver

This is the first silver proof $2.
The $2 coin was introduced in 1988 to replace the extremely short lived currency note of the same denomination. The changeover was rapid and the note, while still legal tender, very quickly disappeared.

1988 Australian Silver Proof Two Dollar Reverse

1988 Australian Silver Proof Two Dollar Obverse

The design on the reverse depicts the bust of a traditional aboriginal elder set against the background of the Southern Cross and Australian Fauna, this restores a recognition of Australian Aboriginal Heritage to Australian currency, which was lost with the introduction of the $1 coin. On the obverse of the coin appears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf.
The proof has frosted designs with mirror fields. 45,000 of the proof coins were packaged in a special, official plush presentation case, accompanied by a certificate.
