Gold Sovereigns

2005 Royal Mint

22 Carat Gold

Britain's 2005 Proof Gold Sovereign displays on its reverse a new and modern interpretation of St George and the Dragon. The distinctive design by Timothy Noad, a Herald Painter at the College of Arms, features the shield as the focal point to capture the drama of the engagement as the three protagonists play out their legendary contest.

The modern depiction of George and the Dragon, by Timothy Noad, will only appear on the 2005 issue.
Opinion is divided amongst collectors, some like the design, others do not. To quote Chard Gold Sovereigns "....opinion is still divided about its artistic and aesthetic merits". Time will tell.
Since The Queen’s crowning in 1953 there have been four effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Previous effigies have been designed by Mary Gillick (1953), Arnold Machin (1966), Raphael Maklouf (1985) and most recently, existing portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley (1998)
