Euro coins of Greece

The euro of Greece was put into cash circulation in 2002. Each Greek euro coin has its own unique design of the national side. Coins of small denominations of 1, 2 and 5 euro cents depict Greek ships. On coins of 10, 20 and 50 euro cents - portraits of famous Greeks (Rigas Feios, John Kapodistria and Eleftherios Venizelos). A coin of 1 euro depicts an owl - a reproduction of the ancient Athenian tetradrachm of the 5th century BC. 2 euro depicts a fragment of a mosaic from Sparta, on which Zeus, turned into a bull, kidnaps the beautiful Europe.

Greece's first commemorative coin was issued in 2004 and was dedicated to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In total, by 2020, 20 commemorative coins with a face value of 2 euro were issued, dedicated to significant sporting and historical events, as well as outstanding personalities of Greece.

In addition, Greece annually issues several collection and anniversary euro coins from precious metals (gold, silver) with a face value of 5 to 200 €.
