Euro coins of Spain

Spanish euro coins have been issued since 1999 at the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. Coins with a face value of €0.01, €0.02 and €0.05 depict the Cathedral of St. James in the city of Santiago de Compostella . By €0.10, €0.20 and €0.50 cent coins - a portrait of the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. And coins in denominations of 1 and 2 euro depict a portrait of the King of Spain Juan Carlos I.

In total, Spain issued 3 series of euro of regular minting. This is due to the fact that coins of the 1999 model did not satisfy the Recommendation of the European Commission of December 19, 2008. As a result, since 2010, Spain has issued a second series of euro coins, on which there is no relief of the stars of the European Union in circumference, and for €1 and €2 the year of issue of the coin was transferred from the outer ring to the inner part. The third series of coins has been issued since 2015, after the accession to the throne of the new king of Spain, Philip VI, on June 19, 2014. The changes affected coins in denominations of 1 and 2 euro, on the obverse of which the portrait of Philip VI is now depicted.

Like all Eurozone countries, Spain has the right to issue commemorative and anniversary coins in denominations of 2 euro. At the end of 2019, the country issued 17 commemorative coins, including 4 of the Roman Treaty series, 10 Years of the Economic and Monetary Union, 10 Years of Cash Circulation of the Euro, and 30 Years of the Flag of Europe.

In addition to commemorative coins, Spain also produces collectible and anniversary euro coins from precious metals. Since 2002, more than 300 collectible gold and silver coins have been issued, in denominations from 5 to 400 euro.
